Astro Boy for Iphone?

9 11 2009

JG Astro boy iphoneAstro Boy, beloved manga from the grandfather of the form, Osamu Tezuka, may be getting just a little more accessible, to iphone and ipod touch users.

Tezuka Productions and D-Arc announced that the series will be released at a rate of 100 pages for 99 cents. The app is not yet live, but is expected to be so soon.

Success of such release could change the way manga is read in the future, possibly with manga designed to be read with an electronic format in mind. Or it could ultimately prove irrelevant. After all, cell phone users in Japan already have manga-reading capability, but the anthology format still survives.

For 99 cents, however, it might just be worth checking out.

jg-mwBased on a manga by one of the most important manga-ka of all time, Osamu Tezuka’s MW is about a Japanese priest and his connection to an underworld boss and a mysterious chemical weapon. The manga was Osamu’s response to grittier styles of manga that were emerging at the time and the movie reflects the more adult style, so expect a little more Bourne and a little less Astro Boy.

22 04 2009

jg_ribbon-knightManga master Osamu Tezuka’s works Buddha and Princess Knight will be getting the animated film treatment sometime around 2010. Buddha, chronicling the life of Siddhartha, founder of Buddhism, is eight volumes long and was released in hardcover and paperback in the U.S. Princess Knight tells the tale of a princess disguised as a boy to protect her from threats to the throne (like Henry IV). Adding another layer, the princess dons another persona, fighting evildoers as the “Ribbon Knight.”
