Manga mag available to online readers

21 05 2009

JG Saint Young MenFans disappointed by the demise of Shojo Beat might take some solace in a new manga source — for those that can read Japanese, anyway.

Japanese comic phone book Morning 2 will be publishing online the day of print. The publishers of the comic mag decided to publish online because the issue sold out too quickly for most readers to buy. Online readership brought about 400,000 new hits to the site, making the venture a huge success.

The comic’s success largely came from the popularity on one of its titles, Saint Young Men (shown above), a story about Buddha and Jesus living in a low rent apartment in Tokyo.

The new model shown to work for Morning 2 could point to a new trend in manga distribution, perhaps some welcome good news for an industry that’s been slowing recently.

Tezuka’s Buddha, Princess Knight to get movie

22 04 2009

jg_ribbon-knightManga master Osamu Tezuka’s works Buddha and Princess Knight will be getting the animated film treatment sometime around 2010. Buddha, chronicling the life of Siddhartha, founder of Buddhism, is eight volumes long and was released in hardcover and paperback in the U.S. Princess Knight tells the tale of a princess disguised as a boy to protect her from threats to the throne (like Henry IV). Adding another layer, the princess dons another persona, fighting evildoers as the “Ribbon Knight.”
