A Hollywood Death Note

4 05 2009

jg_death-note-2It looks to be true. Warner Bros. decided some time ago to produce a live action Hollywood Death Note movie.

The third live action film just came out in the U.S., with a one day subbed, one day dubbed nationwide showing. Warner Bros. Japan was behind those films, so a cross over into the American market was a no brainer.

Still, with three movies already made, does it make sense to make a new film from scratch? And considering some of the latest anime adaptations (Dragonball, cough, cough), will a Hollywood-made Death Note please fans or simply make them upset? If you’ve got a comment, leave us a post.

I’m a huge fan of the Deathnote series but when I watched the ones that had previously been made I had to shut them off. Without making any Japanese producer feel too bad, I couldn’t handle some of the important problems. First, Light had black hair in the film, light has blond (sometimes brown) hair in the Anime. Also, I really hated the way Ryuk was animated. Truthfully, I have no knowledge of animation except what I’ve seen, I leave the tech. wizards to their job. One thing going for the film however was the actor who portrayed L. Seriously, this guy couldn’t have looked more like the L from the anime, well done. I believe that hollywood could pull off a Deathnote movie so long as they stick to the anime. As we’ve all seen, things go terribly bad when you don’t have any knowledge of the story or the characters…(Eragon) *cough* *cough* I vote yes for a well done Deathnote movie.

hollywood movie…as in no subtitles? cuz that would be UHmazing. I like reading, but not for a whole movie =S
it would also be happier if the characters actually LOOKED like the characters. sept for L. he was amazing. but i liked the look of the characters I saw on google if you type in Death Note. it’s on the bottom of the first page. i would like something like that. and no subtitles of course.
mmkay, crappy advice submitted. now i can rest easy x)

An American death note would NEVER work. Americans playing Japanese? Plus Hollywood has NO grasp on the intense Japanese culture that is in Death Note. There are stark differences between Japanese students in Japanese movies and Japanese students in American movies. If the movie did indeed retain the Japanese feel of it, it would be an entirely new experience for the US.

i totally agree there is no way americans can re-do a movie like that without either pissing ppl off or making it a piece of crap hence it will still piss pll off! im a total fan of everything death note (manga, anime, notebooks, live action movie, computer/ds games etc.) and all of it is japanese if they make it into an american version (which they will in 201, which they will and i have my ways of knowing) i either will not watch it in respect for the original or watch it and hence type about how much i hated it!
p.s
they r changing the names
light yagami: light reyonalds
misa amane: misa peterson!!!!!!!!!!
pps
WTF now they r messing the names?!?!?!?!
ppps
wat rite do they have to do that
pppps
thanks if u listned 2 me :D!!!

I totally agree! i mean im a fan of everything death note! (everything) and its all originally japanese! so if they make a american version (which they will in 2011and i have my ways of knowing) i will either not watch it out respect for the original or watch it so i can then write about how much i hate it!!!
ps
they r changing the names of light and misa
light: light reyonalds
misa: misa peterson
pps
WTF?!?!?!
ppps
what rite do they have to mess with the originally made names from the anime, manga and live action movie!!!!!!!
pppps
thnx 4 listenin :D!!!!
-i vote no on the re-make of death note!

I believe that Hollywood shouldn’t destroy another anime of Japan. I hope that they’ve learned a lesson from the recent Dragonball Evolution crap. Put the effect aside, the design of the characters and the story is totally off.

This is just HORRIBLE!!!
I LOVE DEATH NOTE!!! THE ANIME IS AWESOME!!! HUGE FAN!!!
but… if they made a movie i would be disgusted with it, leave death note as the awesome anime it is!!!, they would ruin death note for me and many others, please don’t bring anime down to your * level those kids in that pic playing the characters, i would throw up if i EVER saw them on the screen playing Death Note characters. also i agree the theme would be lost. Hollywood has no clue whatsoever. also, do we really want posers saying they like death note if its a success, while they didnt even bother watching the anime! and while the REAL death note fans are sitting there DISGUSTED!!! STOP RUINING ANIME!!!

I would love to see it if it were well done. I think that it is possible but not probable. Empirically anime adaptations fail miserably.

Ok, I’m pretty much dissappointed with 2 adaptions of Japanese works so far. Dragonball is a goner, Blood the last vampire sucks, and I’ve suffered 2 major blow in the guts for my favourite animes. And therefore I’m not really looking forward to their adaption of Death Note.

I’m a hard core Death Note fan. and if anyone’s making an adaption, I’d prefer if they’d STICK TO THE ORIGINAL WORKS of the creators FOR ONCE!!

-_-

I tried watching the subbed version of the Death Note movie, but I turned it off after like, three minuets. (Did I spell that right??) Anyway, It really bugs me when movies aren’t anythjing like the book or show that there based off of. And light looked nothing like the Light in the anime. This really annoyed me. I’ve been wanting to watch the American version though. I think they could do it, because charecters in Death Note don’t acctually look Japanese, (at least not Light, Misa, or Ryuzaki.) To me at least. I like the picture at the top of the page, they acctually look like the characters in the anime. Another thing: Misa has Black hair in the movie, which annoyed the heck out of me. Misa just isn’t the type of girl who would have black hair.

I love Death Note, so I’m going to be really dissapointed if they screw up this movie.

I think Warner brothers should give this film to Penmen Elite LLC! They’re a duel hybrid motion picture production company based here and next year in Osaka. They cater to both the American and Japanese audience without diluting the production value for the American audience or making it cheesy. They’re a private production company and creators guild and i personally know the CEO. If Kowalski wants to make great films adapted from amine or video games or whatever he should seek out Omima Edilbi. She owns both penmen elite llc and Eco ERA.

NO WAY! the only connection between manga/anime and hollywood is NIGHTMARE!!!
Hollywood doesn’t know anything about adapting manga/anime into live action movies.

They just see some great manga/anime, see that it’s famous, and then trying to make LOT of MONEY from it. And the WORST thing is…. they don’t care about the resemblance, the story, the people, and other things related at all…. in short, they TRASHED them!! (>.<)'

yucks, i hope the writer and publisher know that this MASTERPIECE is to be protected from any hollywood people… better keep it original than trying to adopt it. Just watch DRAGON BALL EVOLUTION…. from 1 to 10, i will definetly give it -999.999 !!!! supersucks superworst super-art-breaker!!! Can you imagine a state-of-the-art like Dragon Ball, which famous for decades….been destroyed by a 1.5 hour movie??????

I VOTE NO !! and NO AT ALL

one more thing…

Using the Dragonball movie as a reason to not make Death Note is silly, because think about it, Dragonball is about flying monsters from some another planet, it was always going to be a stupid movie, Death Note however is an intense psychological thriller which is set in the REAL WORLD, so if Hollywood can make a bat suit wearing billionaire seem plausible I’m sure they make a decent Death Note movie… though it would be very easy to do it terribly wrong, there’s only a few directors and script writers in Hollywood that can do it justice assuming they’re willing to span 3 movies with 140 minutes in each one.
I’d go with either Martin Scorsese or Christopher Nolan.

Well, generally speaking I wouldn’t mind a Death Note movie by Hollywood, of course it’d have to span over more than just one 2-hour movie! I’m a huge fan of everything Death Note, even though I also was deeply disappointed about Misa having black hair in the movie, while she really is blonde!

However, if Hollywood DOES make a Death Note movie, they will have to stick as close to the original as possible, get a real good cast to resemble the characters properly and of course to top it all of it would be awesome to get the voice actors from the english dubbed anime to give their voices to an Hollywood made Death Note movie! It would just not be the same with different voices…

As for above picture: Misa is the only one, in my opinion, who looks like she could suit the character… Light looks way too innocent and young and L. looks just too boy-like and not serious and intelligent enough!!
At least they got the hair right… lol

Oh I forgot: changing the last names of the characters is: UNFORGIVABLE!!!
